The Multi-Agent Org Chart

Senior AI Engineer interview at Google DeepMind, and the interviewer asks:

“Your multi-agent system is built like an org chart. Worker agents draft, mid-level agents consolidate, a manager agent presents the final answer. Research shows the reverse works better: one root proposes, branches fan out, a hidden node synthesizes the leaves. Why does the upside-down tree win?”

Don’t say: “Because more agents collaborate at the end.”

Why structuring multi-agent workflows like corporate hierarchies silently destroys your best outputs and how single-synthesis fan-out trees preserve reasoning fidelity.
